-As a faculty intern, I work with tenured faculty to lesson plan and teach courses in both the Philippine Studies and Philippine Language departments at City College. I have to incorporate student learning outcomes and assessments to measure these outcomes into each lesson plan. I also attend various workshops and trainings by the Faculty Diversity Internship Program (FDIP) that address the struggles and pitfalls that new community college faculty face.

-I did Tagalog language translation and editing for new Tagalog FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School) curriculum in San Francisco Unified School District. The program was launched at Longfellow Elementary and Bessie Carmichael Elementary and is a K-5 program designed to give students proficiency in English and competency in Tagalog. The project also included the launch of a book, “Kilusan for Kids” with curriculum that is meant to be adapted and used in other schools and districts.

-As a paraprofessional, I partner with the special needs students that are in immersion classes and assist them with the materials. I also partner with the primary instructor and tailor the lesson plan materials to meet the needs of oral, visual, or kinesthetic learners. I also assist with classroom management. I partner with teachers in Algebra, Geometry, Spanish, US History, Biology, Physics, College to Career, and Study Skills. I also assist with English Language Learner (ELL) students that speak Spanish and Tagalog. I also served on the school’s Ethnics Board that dealt with academic fraud and other student issues.

Pin@y Educational Partnerships (PEP) – San Francisco, CA
-PEP is a service-learning and community based program that aims to create educational partnerships and projects that work toward social justice. Through service-learning projects and youth campaigns, PEP aims to provide opportunities for college, high school, middle school, and elementary school students to teach and learn from each other about the experiences of Filipina/os while addressing and organizing around community issues. Through all of the projects, PEP’s mission is to promote learning and teaching as practices of freedom. PEP is a program at San Francisco State University, City College of San Francisco, Balboa High School, Phillip and Sala Burton High School, Denman Middle School, and Longfellow Elementary School.
-As a high school teacher, I wrote and implemented lesson plans at both Balboa and Burton High Schools. I would also assist with teachers at Denman Middle School as well as provide Tagalog interpretation for newcomer students from the 3 sites. In the 2009/10 school year, I also co-coordinated a Tagalog lunchtime program at Balboa High School that created a space where immigrant Filipina/o youth could voice their needs and issues. While teaching at City College, I co-taught a class ranging from high school students to senior citizens with department head Dr. Leo Paz. I also facilitated a better partnership between the TULAY program at CCSF and Balboa and Burton high schools to create a smoother transition for Filipino American youth from the high schools into community college.
-Currently, as the Curriculum Coordinator at Balboa high school, I create the syllabus and curriculum for each semester with the directors as well as work with the teachers in developing their lesson plans. I also create the learning outcomes for each unit based on the feedback I get from the teachers and students. I also facilitate the creation and implementations of any assigned projects including our Denman Teaching Project, Youth Participatory Action Research, and Performing Resistance Project.

-As an after-school instructor, I would teach Tagalog language to a group of 10 students from 9-12 grades once a week. I covered basic speaking and reading skills, pronouns, enclitics, and sentence structure so that students could carry on basic conversations and write paragraphs in Tagalog.

Asian American Recovery Services: Project Reconnect – San Francisco, CA
-Project Reconnect is an evidence-based brief treatment approach for adolescents with alcohol and other drug-related issues. A component of Project Reconnect is a leadership group in which youths learn leadership skills, educational/vocational skills, peer counseling, and Asian American history. Culture, pride, and identity, and how they impact youth in their addiction and recovery are addressed through the program.
-As a volunteer with Project Reconnect I lead weekly workshops with a group of 16 students at Galileo High School focusing on drug prevention in the community. As a part of this program I also facilitate workshops with the Filipino Club on campus and teach critical Filipina/o American history.

-The mission of Kaululehua Hawaiian Cultural Center and Halau o Keikiali’i is the preservation and perpetuation of Native Hawaiian culture through various workshops and events that continue the passing of knowledge from skilled cultural practitioners to the public.
-As a volunteer with the center, I lead and facilitate various workshops on hula, various lei making, kapa (barkcloth) making, implement making, and history/myth. I also participate in research projects and grant writing. I was also the programming director of the Bay Area Hawaiian Film Festival for 4 years and was responsible for finding, procuring, and getting authorization for the films shown.
